DriveSync Tracker

This soon to be available (USA first, then maybe Europe) device from DriveSync provides you with off-line GPS tracking of your vehicle, (record and download rather than read-time) allowing you to see when, where, and how it has been driven.

According to the blurb the data is tracked passively and stored in a USB key that plugs into the receiver unit. It then detaches to allow you to read it in a web browser on your home computer via a DriveSync server. The data gets interpreted, and reports are generated including trip logs and usage alerts. The honesty assessment of the “Doing 30mph really Dad!” statements then become a thing of the past, during those meaningful and rewarding teenager bonding conversations.

Many will say its an invasion of privacy, but think of it as a preventive measure. Knowing it’s there means any driver might actually think before doing something stupid. From my point of view, I want my offspring stay alive and to drive carefully so they can look after me in my old age.

By that I mean I hope others as well as me might also consider using the device to protect their loved ones. It’s often not what you do that causes accidents, but the actions of others. This thing might also help in the investigation of accidents, so insurance companies might get interested in having it fitted. We will see!
